Jaundice in newborns is a yellowing of the skin that typically does not require medical treatment. Doctors will most likely test the baby's bilirubin levels. Bilirubin is produced by the breakdown of red blood cells. Jaundice occurs when bilirubin builds up faster than the liver can break it down.

Jaundice in newborns usually disappears in a few days. If bilirubin levels are too high, special blood tests will help determine the cause. Possible causes of abnormally high bilirubin levels may include an infection, a congenital problem with the liver or blood, or difficulties related to breastfeeding.
