A sunburn is the injury that results to the skin after it has been exposed to excess UV radiation. Sunburns cause skin redness and sometimes peeling and blisters. Sunburns, especially those early in life, predispose individuals to an increased risk of skin cancer later in life. Basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and malignant melanoma are the main types of skin cancer.

Excess UV exposure may also lead to wrinkles and premature aging of the skin. The best way to minimize the risk of sunburn is to avoid the sun during peak hours and cover up with long sleeves, long pants, and a hat when outdoors. Regular use of broad-spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15 or more may also help prevent sunburn.
